Easter holidays
The easter holidays 2027 runs from 27 March to 11 April.
The Easter break in Flanders lasts two weeks and is centred around the Easter weekend. It is the longest break after summer and marks the start of the outdoor season.
The exact dates shift each year because Easter is a moveable feast that can fall between 22 March and 25 April. For many families, it is the first chance to enjoy longer evenings and pleasant weather.
It is also the time when many theme parks and tourist attractions open their doors for the season.
Activities during the easter holidays
Animal parks such as Pairi Daiza and Antwerp ZOO are particularly popular and organise special spring events featuring newborn animals. Day trips to the coast or the Ardennes benefit from the longer days and milder weather.
Many cities organise Easter egg hunts in parks and woodlands, including the popular hunts at the Rivierenhof in Antwerp. Cycling along the Scheldt towpath or kayaking on the Lesse in the Ardennes are also top activities.
Floral splendour can be admired at the Botanic Garden of Meise and Floralia Brussels in Groot-Bijgaarden. The Gravensteen Castle in Ghent and the Castle of Bouillon also attract families wanting to combine culture and nature.
Practical info about the easter holidays
Public transport switches to a holiday schedule with less frequent services on certain lines. Sports camps and youth movements offer activities throughout both weeks, from football camps to sailing camps at the coast.
It is a busy period for Belgian holiday parks such as Center Parcs and Sunparks, so booking early is essential. Easter Monday is an official public holiday when most shops and public services are closed.
The Flemish Government publishes the exact dates each school year on onderwijs.vlaanderen.be.
Did you know this about the easter holidays?
The Flemish and Francophone Easter breaks often do not fully overlap. The Flemish break is centred around Easter, while the FWB has been scheduling its "spring break" more often in the second half of April since 2022-2023.
This difference means tourist destinations experience two separate peak periods instead of one. The Easter egg hunt tradition is particularly strong in Flanders, where almost every municipality organises its own event.
Easter is the most popular chocolate occasion after Saint Nicholas, with an estimated turnover of more than 40 million euros in Easter chocolate per year.
