Historical Context

Constitution Day falls on 1 September. Since the 2024 consolidation, it is a state-designated holiday but no longer a paid day off: it is now a working day.

The Slovak Constitution was adopted on 1 September 1992 by the Slovak National Council, four months before Slovakia became independent. The date became a paid public holiday after independence in 1993. In the 2024 consolidation legislation, Constitution Day was stripped of its paid-day-off status but retained its formal designation as a state holiday.

Official ceremonies and a presidential address still mark the day, but with most Slovaks at work, public observance is muted compared to before 2024. Schools and universities sometimes hold lectures on the constitution. The state flag is flown on public buildings.
