Historical Context

Saints Cyril and Methodius Day falls on 5 July. It honours the Byzantine missionaries who brought Christianity and the first Slavic alphabet to the Slovak lands in the 9th century.

Cyril and Methodius arrived in Great Moravia (which encompassed much of present-day Slovakia) in 863 at the invitation of Prince Rastislav. They translated liturgical texts into Old Church Slavonic, devised the Glagolitic alphabet, and laid the foundations for Slavic literacy and church autonomy. The two saints are constitutionally recognised in the preamble of the Slovak Constitution as part of the nation's spiritual heritage.

The day is observed with church services, particularly at Devín Castle near Bratislava, a symbolic site associated with Great Moravia, and at sites linked to the saints across Slovakia. Cultural programmes include readings of early Slavonic texts, folk performances, and academic lectures on the brothers' legacy. It is also a popular day for walks and outdoor outings, often combined with 4 July if it falls on a Friday.

Regional Traditions

Devín (Bratislava)

Devín Castle hosts the central national celebration on 5 July, marking the 863 arrival of the Slavic missionaries in Great Moravia, with state ceremony, historical re-enactments, demonstrations of medieval crafts and a scribe's workshop dedicated to the Glagolitic script. An evening cultural programme from 21:00 closes the day.

Nitra

Nitra holds the traditional Cyrillo-Methodian national pilgrimage on 5 July, when the rooms of the Bishop's Palace at Nitra Castle (which guards a relic of St Cyril) are exceptionally opened to the public. The pilgrimage is folded into the wider "Pribinove a Cyrilo-metodské slávnosti / Nitra, milá Nitra" city festival in the Upper and Lower Town.
