Semester break
The semester break 2028 runs from 4 February to 6 February.
Polročné prázdniny is the semester break, a single-day school holiday that marks the end of the first half of the school year. Report cards (vysvedčenie) are handed out on the last school day before the break, and the day off gives families a long weekend before second-semester classes begin.
The break was abolished in 2022 as part of school-calendar reforms but reinstated in April 2025 by Minister of Education Tomáš Drucker through vyhláška 56/2025 Z. z., taking effect for the 2025-2026 school year. Monday 2 February 2026 was the first restored polročné.
Activities during the semester break
A common low-key family weekend: skiing, swimming, or simply a long Saturday-Sunday-Monday stretch off. Some ski resorts run special semester-break promotions, and indoor aquaparks see high attendance.
Many families simply use the day to recover from the report-card week, or pair it with the weekend for a quick trip to grandparents.
Practical info about the semester break
School-based childcare (školské kluby) is closed. Public transport runs on a weekday schedule.
The day is rarely a vacation trigger by itself: most families pair it with weekend leisure rather than travelling. Workplaces, shops, and government offices operate normally.
Did you know this about the semester break?
The semester break is the shortest holiday of the Slovak school year: a single day. Its purpose is administrative, separating the first and second semesters and allowing teachers to finalise grades; report cards are handed out on the school day immediately before.
The break has had a turbulent recent history. Minister Branislav Gröhling's decree 163/2022 Z. z. removed it from the school calendar in 2022, and three years later Minister Tomáš Drucker reinstated it under vyhláška 56/2025 Z. z. effective 1 April 2025.
