The region often experiences cold nights and valley fog at this time of year, giving the Ardennes a mysterious atmosphere. For students, it is a welcome interruption after the first intensive period of classes.

The autumn break also gives families in the region a chance to take advantage of the proximity to Germany and Luxembourg for short cross-border trips.

The Ardennes landscape invites hiking and cycling, particularly through the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park with its stunning autumn colours. Many municipalities organise holiday camps and workshops for children and young people in both German and French. The nearby cities of Aachen and Liege offer additional options for shopping and culture. The Ikob museum in Eupen and the Vennbahn cycle path are also recommended for a varied holiday week.
How long is the autumn break in East Belgium?
The autumn break in East Belgium covers five consecutive school-free weekdays from Monday to Friday, or nine consecutive days off when you include the two surrounding weekends. The community aligns with the Flemish calendar and keeps the same length, while Wallonia-Brussels has offered a two-week break since 2022-2023. All Saints' Day on 1 November almost always falls during the week and can produce a bridge day for working parents.
